What data security considerations, such as FERPA and HIPAA considerations should I be aware of if I use Gemini?

  • Gemini is not approved for use with any personally identifying or highly restricted (Level 3) University data. See Guideline for Data Handling.
     
  • Student education records, Student ID and Social Security numbers, and Financial information are considered Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and as such, you should not use Gemini or any AI tools with any information involving student education record data.
     
  • Do not use Gemini or any other AI tools for protected health information (PHI), or data subject to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
     
  • Take time to familiarize yourself with the current UNC Charlotte data retention policies when using AI tools and applications.
