What are some FAQs for the 2025 Windows 10 End of Support Project?

Tags windows-10

The following FAQs and additional FAQs regarding Windows 10 End of Life are available in the Windows 10 End of Life October 1 2025 Knowledge Base category.

Why can't I continue to use Windows 10 after Oct 1, 2025?

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 in October 2025, which means no new security patches will be released. Once this happens, the devices present a significant security risk and will no longer be allowed on the university network. See the Project page for more information.

Why are departments responsible for buying new computers to replace Windows 10 computers?

Many of the Windows 10 computers are older computers being used for a department specific purpose e.g. student or shared workstations, specialized labs or for specialized equipment. It is therefore the responsibility of the department to purchase a new computer if the computer is still needed. No centralized funding has been identified for this purpose. See the Project page for more information.

How do departments purchase new computers?

OneIT will work with Directors and unit liaisons to identify what computers need to be replaced. This information will be provided to the unit leader. Once funding has been identified and approved for this purpose, departments can order new computers through the Dell punch-out catalog in 49erMart. OneIT will be notified of the purchase and will work with department liaisons to install the new computers. New computers must be purchased by August 1, 2025 to ensure they can be received and deployed prior to October 1. 2025. See the Project page for more information.

What are the hardware recommendations for new computers to replace Windows 10 devices?

OneIT recommends this Dell hardware. These are the default options in the 49erMart Dell Punch-out catalog.

Dell Laptop Standard Package

  • Dell Standard Model: Dell Mobile Precision 3490 i7, 16gb, 256 ssd, 3 year warranty, keyboard and mouse not included

Dell Laptop Research Package

  • Dell RESEARCH Model: Dell Mobile Precision 3490 i7, 32gb, 512 ssd, 3 year warranty, keyboard and mouse not included

Consider purchasing a dock and a monitor if needed:

  • WD22TB4 dock, P2425 monitor

See the Project page for more information.

If I still need to have a Windows 10 computer after Oct. 1, 2025, what do I need to do?

See the Project page for more information. Because Windows 10 computers will not meet the Guideline for Security of Endpoints, they will be removed from the network in October 2025. If an exception is needed, please see this FAQ and submit an exception request. All requests must be received by September 15, 2025.

How do Windows 10 computers get retired? What is the process?

Once the IT Director/unit liaison identifies that a computer is no longer needed, a request will be made to surplus the computer. Technicians will schedule a time for the computer(s) to be surplused with the IT Director/Unit Liaison. OneIT expects to manage the surplus process in February '25 - October '25.
