How do I share a file/folder in Dropbox?

You are able to easily share a file or folder with someone via Dropbox by selecting the Share option and providing their email address.  Follow these steps, depending on if you're using the Dropbox Sync App or Dropbox online:

  1. Log into Dropbox and select the file/folder you want to share
  2. Select or hover over the file/folder you wish to share and click on the Share button to the right

  3. Click Create a link to get a link for documentation or sharing in an email OR enter the email address of the person/people you wish to share with
    1. If you select to enter email address(es), it may be useful to provide a personalized message with relevant details about the contents and purpose of the file/folder you're sharing

  4. Click Share when your message is complete, or Close the window after copying the link
  5. Repeat this process if you want to share another file/folder

Size Limits

Issues may be seen when sharing/unsharing a file over 10GB or a folder with over 10,000 files. See this page for more information.

  1. Find the file/folder you want to share
  2. Right-click on it and select the desired Share option
    1. On a file: Click Share Dropbox link
      1. The link will be copied to the clipboard to be pasted into messages / documents

    2. On a folder: Right-click on the folder and click Share...

      1. Share Dropbox link - The link will be copied to the clipboard to be pasted into messages / documents
      2. Share this folder...- Enter email addresses, change permissions as needed, and add a message (optional)

Non-University Sharing

If you wish to share something with an off campus affiliate, this is possible. Just remember not to share information inappropriately by reviewing the Data Handling Guideline.
