Why am I getting prompted to install updates on my Windows computer?

The university's Windows computers are managed by OneIT using Microsoft's Software System Center (SCCM).

  1. Microsoft pushes out patches to fix vulnerabilities in their operating system and applications once a month.
  2. IT reviews these patches and deploys them to university machines.
  3. The patches are deployed the 4th week of the month, on Tuesday, and users are given until Thursday morning to voluntarily install the patches.
  4. The machine will automatically reboot no more than 56 hours after the patch has been deployed, Thursday afternoon. Since we don't want anyone to be surprised and lose work, a pop-up notification appears 8 hours in advance of the automatic re-boot.

NOTE:  If you see the restart required notice:

  1. Reboot so that the patches will get installed.
  2. Or, the machines will automatically reboot on own after 8 hours.
