How do students install Respondus LockDown Browser?

If your instructor requires Respondus LockDown Browser for a quiz, you must use it to access and complete the assessment. LockDown Browser is a secure testing application that locks down your browser environment during the quiz. While the browser is active, you cannot:

• Print or copy/paste content
• Access other websites (unless embedded in quiz questions)
• Open other applications on your computer

Getting Started with LockDown Browser

When you first access a quiz requiring LockDown Browser, Canvas will display a download link if the software isn't already installed on your device.

Installation Options:

• Campus labs: LockDown Browser is pre-installed in most computer labs across campus
• Personal or university computers: If the software isn't installed, you'll need to download it using the link provided in Canvas. Installation takes approximately 5 minutes.

Important: You must use the UNC Charlotte-specific version of LockDown Browser accessed through your Canvas quiz link. Installations from other institutions or general downloads from the manufacturer will not work with Charlotte quizzes.

How to install Respondus LockDown Browser:

1. Log into Canvas
    
2. Open your course
    
3. Click the link for your quiz
   Note: If you don't yet have a quiz requiring Respondus LockDown Browser, you can self-enroll in one of the testing courses to read information about installing the LockDown Browser and access sample quizzes
    
4. You will see the message, This quiz requires Respondus LockDown Browser on the page
    
5. Click Take the Quiz

6. Click the Download Respondus LockDown Browser link.
    
    
7. The Respondus LockDown Browser Installation page is displayed - there is one link for Windows computers and one link for Mac OSX computers. Select the installation link that matches your device.
   
    
8. Click Install Now
    
9. The installer file will download to your computer, most likely to your Downloads folder
    
10. On a Mac:
    Locate the InstallLDBPackage zip file and double click it. This will unzip the installer file. The expanded file will be named Install Respondus LockDown Browser.pkg. Double click that file to run the installer. 
    
    On a PC:
    Locate the LockDownBrowser file in the Downloads folder and double click it. This will launch the Respondus LockDown Browser 2 - InstallSheild Wizard. 
     
11. On Mac or PC, the installer Introduction page is displayed. Click Continue or Next
     
12. Accept the license agreement and click Continue or Next
     
13. Click Agree to accept the software license agreement
     
14. On a Mac:
    If you want to change the installation location, click Change Install Location and follow the directions
    On a PC: Click through the installer to the end. 
     
15. Click Install (Mac) or Finish (PC) - if on a PC  - you are done and you can close the window and navigate back to the Quiz. 
     
16. If necessary on a Mac, enter your NinerNET credentials that allow you to install an application and click Install Software
     
17. The installation will start and you will view the progress
     
18. When the installation is complete, click Close
    
     

19. On a Mac: Launching LockDown Browser

    The launch process depends on your quiz type:
    New Canvas Quizzes: LockDown Browser will launch automatically when you open the quiz 
    Classic Canvas Quizzes: You must manually open Respondus LockDown Browser from your computer before launching the quiz 

       19. On a PC: LockDown Browser will launch automatically when you open a Quiz it is attached to. Make sure to check the box "Always allow to open links of this type in the associated app" and click on the Open LockDown Browser button.
