You can create engaging and fun video discussions between students and instructors by leveraging tools in Canvas and Zoom: 1) Canvas Discussions + 2) Canvas Studio Library, + Zoom Recordings. Studio can host videos created in Zoom which can then be embedded through any space in Canvas that can launch Studio through the rich content editor (RCE), including:
- Pages
- Assignments
- Announcements
- Quizzes
- Discussions
The following are directions for creating an engaging Canvas Video Discussion where students and instructors will respond and reply to each other using Zoom video recordings.
Note: Recording your video response with Zoom instead of Studio Capture adds an extra step to the video discussion process, however, Zoom has fun and engaging options including filters, stickers, and special effects that the user can apply to their video response.
1. The course instructor should log into Canvas and navigate to their course.
2. Select Discussions from the left-hand navigation menu
3. Under Discussions, click the green +Discussion button to create a new discussion
4. Enter the discussion Topic Title, and select any Options you want to apply to the discussion, such as it being worth points (Graded), or students not being able to see other students responses until they have posted their first response (Users must post before seeing replies).
5. Decide how you will prompt the students on what to discuss through a recorded video:
a. Option 1: Write the directions out
b. Option 2: Record a video with Zoom, upload it to your Studio Library, and embed it in the paragraph section below the rich content editor (RCE).
c. Option 3: Record a video with Studio Capture - directions can be found in this FAQ - How do I create video discussions using Canvas Discussions and Studio?
Note: See the screenshot below showing the menu option for importing a video recorded in Zoom to your Studio Library (Upload from Computer).
