What is Windows Hello?

Beginning April 2025, the University will manage Windows-based computers, such as newly issued Dell computers, using Windows Azure Cloud Join to provide a more efficient and secure process for managing these university-issued devices. As part of this change Windows Hello will be available on new computers issued April 2025 and later.

Windows Hello provides a more secure and efficient way to sign in to a Windows device.

  • Instead of using your NinerNet password, with Windows Hello you can sign in using a PIN, or facial recognition/fingerprint if your device supports these biometric methods.
  • The PIN for Windows Hello is a six-character code that you will create during set up. It can contain both numbers and letters.
  • If your device does not support facial recognition or fingerprint, then you will only see the option to create a PIN.

Because your PIN (or facial recognition/fingerprint) data never leaves your PC and is never collected by servers, these credentials cannot be used by anyone who does not have physical access to your device—protecting you and your device.

  • If you forget your PIN, you can still log in with your NinerNet password.
  • The Service Desk does not have access to your PIN.
