How do Faculty add a Coursera Program to a Canvas Course?

Charlotte has partnered with Coursera to provide Faculty and Staff with access to over 650 high-quality program options. These programs can be seamlessly integrated into Canvas courses to enrich learning through Canvas Assignments. 

The following instructions will guide you through the process of accessing Coursera in Canvas, selecting a Coursera program, and adding it to an assignment for your students.

1. Log in to the Canvas course you want to add a Coursera program to

2. In the left-hand navigation menu - select Assignments

3. On the Assignments page, click the green +Assignment button


4. Name the Assignment to match the Coursera Program/Topic you are going to link to, add any instructions to the open text field, set the point value for the assignment, assignment group, and other assignment settings

5. When you get to Submission Type, click the drop-down arrow, select External Tool, and click the Find button

6. The Configure External Tool box will pop-up, scroll down until you see Coursera and select it

7. After you click Coursera, the Link Resource from External Tool box will appear with Programs listed. Choose a Program
📌 Note: The majority of faculty using Coursera will choose "Faculty Use- Coursera for Canvas Courses." The other two options (CCI Use and SPS Use) will not work via Canvas Assignments as shown in this FAQ.

8. The Link Resource from External Tool box will display a list of available courses, and you can use the Search Course field to find the one you want to add using Canvas Assignments

9. Choose the course you want to add and click the blue Submit button

9. You will be taken back to the Configure External Tool pop-up box. Note that in the URL box there is a link to the Coursera course you choose. Note: Make sure to check the "Load in a new tab" box, and then click the green Select button

10. Finish the Assignment settings (Allowed Attempts, Due Dates, Available From/Until Date) and click the Green Save and Publish button to add the Coursera program content to your assignments for students to access.

11. Click the Assignment name to open the Coursera login page and set up your account (you will only need to do this the first time)

  • Enter your NinerNET email address, making sure to use the format @charlotte.edu
  • Create any password—you don’t need to remember it - once you click Continue, UNC Charlotte will sync your log-in with your NinerNet credentials for automatic access in the future

                                                                                                                                                     

12. You will now have access to your Coursera program content. Example below is a course on IBM Introduction to Mobile App Development

13. Within 24-hours, the Assignments associated with the Coursera program will populate on your Assignments page and in Grades
