After Monday, February 2, 2026, older versions of the Duo Mobile Application (earlier than version 4.85) will no longer work for two-step login at UNC Charlotte. To continue accessing campus systems that require Duo two-step authentication, you must update your Duo Mobile app or set up an alternative authentication method.

What You Need to Do

Step 1: Check Your Device
Your phone must meet these minimum requirements to support the latest version of Duo Mobile:

How to check your phone version:
  • iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > About > iOS Version
  • Android: Settings > About Phone > Android Version
  • Apple devices: iOS 16.0 or newer
  • Android devices: Android 12 or newer

Step 2: Update Duo Mobile
If your device meets the requirements:

  1. Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
  2. Search for “Duo Mobile”
  3. Tap Update
  4. Open Duo Mobile and confirm it’s working

Note: If there is an available update for the Duo Mobile app, the button will be labeled as Update. Otherwise, if the button displays Open, it indicates that there are no pending updates available.

What If Your Phone Is Too Old?

If your phone cannot upgrade to iOS 16.0 or Android 12, you have options:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this change happening?
Duo is ending support for older app versions to improve security and performance. Older versions will no longer receive security updates and may have compatibility issues.

What happens if I don’t update?
After February 2, 2026:

  • You will no longer receive Duo Push requests
  • You can still launch the app and generate passcodes for Duo-protected apps and third-party services.

How do I know if I need to update?

  1. Open Duo Mobile
  2. Click the three horizontal lines (hamburger icon) at the top left of the screen
  3. The version of Duo Mobile app being used by the device will be listed at the bottom
If it’s earlier than 4.85, you need to update.
(Note: Pay attention to trailing zeroes and decimals. For example, 3.40 ≠ 3.4.0, and 4.85 is older than 4.102.0.)

Can I still use my current phone?
Only if it supports iOS 16.0 or Android 12 or newer. Otherwise, you’ll need an alternative device or authentication method.

I updated my app - what’s next?
Nothing! If Duo Mobile works for two-step logins, you’re all set.
