Dropbox Home Folder Changes

Summary

Dropbox recently made changes to the root folder. This can have the potential to break scripted files and macros that are linked to dropbox and also prevents the end user from putting files into the root folder of Dropbox. All files must now be placed in the home folder of the user within Dropbox.

Body

Dropbox made a change to how files are stored within the Dropbox folder.

Dropbox now takes the user's name and creates a folder with the user name as the "home" folder and moves all the contents of the person's dropbox into it.

Note this is a system-wide change and affects both Dropbox for Desktop and web versions:

web version dropbox

When you open Dropbox for Desktop, the user sees a "new" folder with their name. Users only have permission to make changes and add new folders with the new, named folder.

Users cannot add files or folders to the root dropbox folder.  They MUST only make changes within their named folder.

Attempts to place files into the base folder of Dropbox will result in the following error:

Folder access denied
